Situated 50kms from Vryheid in malaria-free northern KwaZulu-Natal, Babanango Game Reserve boasts 22 000-hectares of pristine wilderness waiting to be explored by conservation and nature enthusiasts. The Reserve offers guests a captivating bush experience and the opportunity to be a part of a groundbreaking conservation project that will benefit local communities and protect precious wildlife for future generations to enjoy. Babanango Game Reserve has recently introduced buffalo to the protected area, with the remainder of the Big-Five to call the reserve home over the next two years. Visitors can also expect to encounter giraffe, hyena, zebra, several antelope species as well as the elusive aardvark and aardwolf. Lodges on the reserve include Babanango Valley Lodge, Zulu Rock, and Matatane Lodge – each unique in their offering and experience.

Babanango Valley Lodge

Babanango Valley Lodge is a luxury safari lodge in the heart of Zululand ideal for nature lovers wanting to escape city life. The lodge overlooks the picturesque Nsubeni River Valley with glistening granite koppies, sandstone cliffs, and quartzite ridges stretching into the far distance where the White Umfolozi River flows. 

The lodge boasts pristine bushveld and is home to hippos, giraffe, hyena, zebra, several antelope species as well as the elusive aardvark and aardwolf. Buffalo have recently been introduced to the reserve with plans for the remainder of the Big-Five to come over the next two years. 

With nine tastefully decorated and spacious rooms sleeping up to 18 people, each bedroom has a garden outlook with views over the reserve. Two rooms have interleading doors to create a comfortable four-bed family unit. The generous honeymoon suite, slightly separate from the lodge, offers the perfect retreat for newly married couples or those looking to indulge in a little alone time.

Babanango Valley Lodge offers guests the perfect opportunity to relax and unwind in nature’s embrace or to get their hearts racing with activities unique to a safari lodge. Morning and evening game drives are conducted daily and will take guests into the heart of Babanango Game Reserve, while guided bush walks, and mountain biking excursions can be arranged. 

Zulu Rock Lodge

Situated atop a mountainside on the outer reaches of Babanango Game Reserve, three-star Zulu Rock Lodge offers sweeping views across a sensational wilderness and an immersive bush experience. Visitors to Zulu Rock Lodge can enjoy the abundance of wildlife in the surrounding Babanango Game Reserve, which boasts 22 000-hectares of pristine wilderness waiting to be explored by conservation and nature enthusiasts.  Decorated with clean lines and curated Zulu artifacts, the lodge’s stone-clad chalets are spaced out for privacy and designed to maximize the views. Featuring seven units and sleeping up to 16 people, guests will fall in love with this intimate bush setting while sitting at the lapa or cooling down in the pool. Set back from the hillside, the family unit sleeps four people and boasts its own pool and lapa area with space for children to play. 

Whilst the lodge’s honeymoon suite also has its own pool and private deck, this romantic corner of the reserve offers that ‘on-top-of the-world’ feeling and will set the tone for a lifetime of wedded bliss.   Zulu Rock Lodge offers guests the opportunity to relax and unwind or to get their hearts racing with activities unique to a safari lodge. Morning and evening game drives are conducted daily and will take guests into the heart of Babanango Game Reserve, while guided bush walks, and mountain biking excursions can be arranged.  History tours of the nearby battlefields are also available and feature Isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift along with the eMakhosini Valley (Valley of the Kings), combining nature and history into one experience!
