Capetonians are invited to show their love of the Mother City by joining a fun ‘City Clean Up’ on Saturday, 18 May 2019 at Grand Parade between 07h00 – 10h00, the day before the much anticipated FNB Cape Town 12 ONERUN.
“The FNB Cape Town 12 ONERUN encapsulates the splendour of Cape Town - the city, the vibe and its people,” says Agne du Plessis, Stillwater Sports General Manager: Road Running. “We are excited to play our part in keeping the city clean before, during and after hosting the Cape’s premier 12km road race. We are proud to continue our partnership with PETCO who will provide plastic bags and gloves for the clean-up and GOSCOR who will bring their impressive road sweep vehicles. This year John Kieser and his team from Plastics SA will remove and dispose of all waste material, after which certification will be provided. We look forward to welcoming all Capetonians to the 2019 FNB Cape Town 12 ONERUN City Clean-Up.”
PETCO is South Africa’s national industry body that is accountable for managing the PET plastic industry’s Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR).
“PETCO is thrilled to once again be involved with the FNB Cape Town 12 ONERUN’s City Clean-Up,” says Janine Basson, PETCO Stakeholder and Relations Manager. “These types of initiatives allow for us to move off the side-lines and into the thick of consumer and civic responsibility. Plastic touches us all, whether directly or indirectly, and it is imperative that we come together to be part of true sustainability when the opportunity (such as this clean-up) presents itself. The FNB Cape Town 12 ONERUN is a great initiative for residents and tourists alike to see and appreciate Cape Town. Clean-ups have an important role to play in shifting South Africa away from a ‘take-make-dispose’ system to a circular economy by ensuring that valuable resources, such as PET plastic bottles, are diverted from landfill and collected for recycling. We are excited to once again be part of the initiative.”
According to John Kieser, Sustainability Manager Plastics SA, the organization focuses on plastic leakage into the environment with a special focus on the marine and aquatic environment. “Our involvement is to highlight proper management of waste material. Our focus will be on area cleansing and ensuring that the waste collected (not just plastics) is recycled in an environmentally friendly manner. Runners and all Capetonians can play their part by not littering. Use the designated Litter Zones that will be on route on event day. Help us to keep our city clean.”
In 2019 the organisers of the FNB Cape Town 12 ONERUN have announced that they will implement a Single-Use Plastic (SUP) Management Campaign that aims to drastically reduce the usage of single-use plastics by 85%.
“As part of our campaign we have teamed up with #RunClean and will be implementing strict ‘litter zones’ to ensure a litter free route, while with #ICarryMyOwn we will encourage runners to be self-sustained by running with a hydration pack and/or water bottle. We would like to invite all entrants to support our campaign, help keep our cities clean so that you can #RunYourCityYourWay,” confirms du Plessis.
One of the biggest fans of these initiatives to reduce single use plastic and race waste, as well as clean up the city, is Sean Falconer, Editor of Modern Athlete magazine. “We started our #RunClean campaign a few years ago to educate runners to stop littering during road runs, particularly through responsible disposal of plastic water sachets, and while this campaign is steadily leading to a positive change in behaviour amongst runners, the campaign is given even more impetus when event organisers get on board with the drive.”
“Stillwater Sports, organiser of the FNB Cape Town 12 ONERUN, is one of the most progressive event companies in South African road running, having made a huge commitment to reduce plastic usage and waste at its events, and its pre-race city clean-ups are a tremendous way to give back to the cities and communities that host their races while helping to reduce the amount of waste that ends up in the environment and oceans. I really hope more event organisers take a leaf out of Stillwater’s books with similar initiatives.”
