Graze by the River is a coffee bar and restaurant situated in one of the original 1820 settler's homes next to the banks of the Kowie River in Port Alfred. The venue boasts a private garden area at the back of the property where you can escape from the busy Van der Riet street and enjoy freshly roasted coffee or sample some of the many homemade dishes on offer.

Nick Howard is the owner and Chef of Graze by the River which he founded out of a passion for good, honest, and healthy food. As a frequent traveller to many parts of the globe, he learns about food from different cultures and brings these dishes back to South Africa, for Graze clients to savour.

The menu is based on locally available ingredients from fresh seafood, smoked meats and organic vegetables. Interesting, tasty dishes are supplemented by daily specials. The restaurant has its own smoker for preparing a lot of the dishes and the coffee bar roasts its own green beans daily ensuring good quality fresh coffee. So whether you're looking for a great breakfast, some coffee and cake or a tasty homemade meal come and enjoy the experience of Graze by the River.

Gastronomic delight

As regular diners at Lara's we are always amazed at the creativity and flavour of each dish. Wonderful experience.

Absolutely delicious!

We went for dinner on Wednesday night, not knowing that it is 'Rib' night, so while initially disappointed that we didn't have a selection, the meal turned out to be superb !

The portions were very generous and came with some veges and potato wedges, as well as a large greek salad with lots of feta, olives and avo, and some lightly toasted bread, which looked delicious but we were all too full to manage any! The ribs were excellent - fall of the bone tender, with a good tangy barbeque sauce. None of us had any space for dessert. I'm looking forward to my next visit to Port Alfred, which will definitely include a trip to Lara's !

The Design
"There was a new lesson every day. I became an electrician, plumber and painter in the space of a few months."

The first talk of creating some kind of tourist destination on our property in Stutterheim, started in our cramped little 1 room flat in England. What started off as a wild idea then, quickly became possible when I arrived back home in South Africa.

The first talk of creating some kind of tourist destination on our property in Stutterheim, started in our cramped little 1 room flat in England. What started off as a wild idea then, quickly became possible when I arrived back home in South Africa. I found that Charles Claasen who I once worked for at a lodge in Knysna, had taken a job in Stutterheim. We got chatting and it wasn’t long before we decided that there should be a backpackers here…

The perfect spot was discovered where the forest created a large cove of grassland and the planning and preparation began. The grass was so high that it hung over our heads, so it had to be burnt to enable us to start the surveying. ‘Ample’ firebreaks were burnt and the fire was lit on a beautiful ‘hot’ autumn day. In minutes the entire 20 acre property was being devoured by flames, and briefly we stood frozen from shock as petrified amateurs do. We started our helpless attack when it became obvious that the fire had intentions of taking out the entire forest and neighboring farms.
