Blue & Mako Shark diving

WE ARE THE PIONEERS OF BLUE AND MAKO SHARK DIVING IN HERMANUS. Join Majestic Cruising on an adventure to film and dive with the majestic Blue and Mako sharks in Hermanus, the deep blue warm waters 35 to 40 nautical miles off Hermanus. Diving with scuba, drifting in the currents and freely swimming with these awesome sharks.

Blue & Mako Shark diving

Divers will enjoy the Blue’s and Mako’s in their natural environment whilst you drift dive off the back of our vessel. These sharks are very inquisitive and will surround you on your dive. Apart from seeing the sharks, you will also see a vast number of sea bird species, penguins, seals, dolphins and maybe even some game fish. This dive is great for all age divers with minimum open water one certificate.

On the Blue and Mako Shark Diving tour you may watch videos of our other Great White Dives or just relax, play back gammon or chat to your fellow divers. Coffee/tea/soft drinks will be served along with some light snax. From our top deck  receive a pair of binoculars and enjoy the marine bird life.

Arriving at the dive site the water will be indingo blue with temperatures ranging from 16 degrees to 18 degrees. A further safety briefing will be given and all divers will commence kit up. A certified Dive Instructor will guide the dive from here, whilst another Dive instructor will be in the water on a rubber tendor duck which will be above the divers at all times. This is an added safety precaution taken by ourselves.

Once the dive is over, Hot milo and soup and freshly baked bread will be ready on the boat.

About your trip
We depart between 6am and 8am
The duration of your diving trip is around 9 hours weather permitting

EcoTracker Course: Animal tracks and tracking

A vast amount of information can be gathered about mammals, birds and reptiles without ever having seen them. Every animal leaves some indication of its presence that can be recognised. Through the ancient art of animal tracking participants will connect with Africa’s iconic places and wildlife on foot. This course take place in the remote wilderness areas of southern Africa.

In many parts of Africa, traditional skills of tracking have disappeared at an alarming rate – alarming because without these skills, humanity's connection to the earth is significantly reduced. The time-worn skills of tracking taught human beings to live consciously with an appreciation and respect for the natural world. With urbanisation and technology, much of this profound ecological intelligence is being lost at a time when it is most important to our long-term survival.

Visitors to EcoTracker will get a taste of this knowledge from trackers who have dedicated themselves to mastering the skills of traditional hunter-gatherers.

What is tracking?

There are two major aspects to tracking – Track and Sign Interpretation and Trailing (following animal trails). EcoTracker includes Hunter-gatherer techniques as part of this course. All aspects of tracking take years to master.

• Track and Sign Interpretation (week 1) – this component of tracking looks at the signs left by invertebrates, amphibians, birds, reptiles and mammals. All learning takes place in the field using field-guides, photographs and presentations to supplement practical training.

• Trailing (week 2) – this component involves following tracks to find the animal. Mastering trailing takes years and this aspect of the course requires a relatively high level of fitness and an ability to focus mentally. EcoTracker's instructors are amongst the best animal trailers in South Africa and we pride ourselves on our ability to teach this complex skill. Students will have the opportunity to practice trailing animals themselves - under the watchful eye of an EcoTracker instructor. Interpreting mammal and bird alarm calls, animal behaviour and assessing the age of tracks form part of the trailing skill set.

• Hunter-gatherer techniques – Southern Africa's indigenous peoples have survived off the land for centuries. EcoTracker's instructors will teach you how to build traps using only natural materials, show you how to find birds’ nests, water and edible fruits. Through sharing of their experiences growing up in the wilderness, the instructors will immerse students in the wild.

Spionkop Lodge

Spion Kop Lodge is situated on Woodlands Farm, was owned by Mrs George Spearman, at the turn of the century 1899 – 1900. The homestead is referred to in the History Books as Spearman’s Hill.  It was seconded by General Sir Redvers Buller , Commander -in Chief , of the British Forces in South Africa , with  23 000 troops under his command.

Mount Alice, on the farm, became Buller’s headquarters during the Upper Tugela Campaign, to relieve the besieged town of Ladysmith.  During the campaign a 23 year old Journalist, by the name of Winston Churchill, spent much of his time on Spearman’s Farm with General Buller.
