
The most exciting event on the North Coast this winter
The most glamorously fashionable event to hit the news this winter is sure to be the SAPPI sponsored Eco Design Show at the Ballito Prawn & Jazz Festival on Sunday 4th July at the Collisheen.
As the festival is a green event we have taken the initiative to organise an eco-friendly component commonly referred to as sustainable fashion or eco-fashion, said organizer Leanne Rencken.
And so in keeping with the theme of our festival, Event-It, together with a Design Academy have given 60 fashion design students the brief to produce a story board of a unique design which must be eco-friendly and comprise of recycled materials.
Then the panel of judges from the sponsor SAPPI, Event-It and the design school will choose 10 of the best designs which will be brought to life and showcased at the Ballito Prawn Festival Fashion Show, where judges will choose the best three designs and the winner and runner ups will be announced at the event.
The eco-design component will form only a part of the couture on the run way, we are also show casing some of our very own talented, young, designers be sure to come along to view fashion from Ashtons, Maryke Designs, White Summer and White Night Sleepwear.

The Celebrity Cook-Off
The Ballito Prawn & Jazz Festival is a smorgasbord of entertainment for the entire family.
Another of the highlights of the weekend’s entertainment will be the Celebrity Cook-Off, where eight talented, local chefs battle it out against the clock and each other, to create original delicious dishes in 40 minutes with the assistance of a local celebrity.
Each chef is paired up with a local celebrity and is provided with a mystery basket of seafood ingredients kindly sponsored by Tight-Line Fisheries. The two chefs will have a chance to describe what they will cook using the basket of ingredients and competing two teams are appropriately named the “Mussel Pots” and the “Prawn Platters”. The timers are set and the cook-off begins. The Celebrity Cook-Off is scheduled for Saturday, 03 July with the finals taking place on Sunday, 03 July. Come and support your favourite local chef and celebrity as they compete for the coveted title.
The celebrities have kindly donated their time and to give you a sneak preview of a few celebs who will be assisting our talented chefs … Kanyi Gasa, the CEO of iLembe Enterprise, Bok van Blerk, and the “Beast” to mention only few.
A state of the art designer kitchen sponsored by Easy Life Kitchen and appliances from Siemens will provide the perfect platform for our chefs to work miracles with their mystery baskets. A packed store cupboard with all the little extras has been sponsored by Lifestyle SPAR Ballito.
On Friday evening, 02 July, each chefs will get the opportunity to draw a celebrities name from the hat and together they will have to cook up a gourmet delight.
A panel of judges from the National Culinary Chefs Association; will be given the difficult task of judging the winner from a round robin series. The winning chef will hold the coveted title of “Ballito Prawn Festival Cook-Off Champ” and the celebrity assistant … well they might just have learnt a cooking tip or two!

Not Just Prawns...but a Festival of Sports
Are you a sports junk? Then don’t miss out on the jam packed sports programme at the 2010 Ballito Prawn & Jazz Festival.
The festivals’ sports programme will consist of:
- Angling Fishing Competition sponsored by ESA;
- aQuelle “Sugar Rush” MTB Cycle challenge sponsored by aQuella and Whysalls. Spur are sponsors of the kids MTB challenge;
- 4x4 Regional Competition hosted by the 4 Wheel Drive Club of Southern Africa, sponsored by Stedone Homes and Talisman Ballito; and
- Golf Day;
ESA – On Friday, 02 July the focus will be on a kids’ fun fishing clinic hosted by the ESA Pro’s. Kids will get coached by the very best and learn the importance of caring for our environment while having the fishiest of fun. The ESA pros will also be making guest appearances at local schools, so don’t miss them. On Saturday, 03 July enter a 4-Rod team and have the opportunity to out fish the ESA champs. Two MTB challenges will be hosted at “Holla Trails” at the Collisheen Estate, listed at Number 1 in the recent Bicycling Magazine. On Friday, 02 July 2010, the sports programme will kick-off with the Kiddies Spur “Sugar Rush” MTB race, where younger members of the family are invited to flex their muscles and participate in this event. This will be a fun filled competition with lots of prizes to be won.
On Saturday, 03 July 2010, the aQuelle “Sugar Rush” MTB challenge will start the day. This will suit all riding levels. Those who race for a placing and those who wish to enjoy the beautiful scenic routes the North Coast is so renowned for.
This race will lead riders through the beautiful sugar cane farm lands. Mountain bike enthusiasts can enjoy some of the county’s most unspoilt terrain and finish at the Prawn & Jazz Festival where there is entertainment for the whole family, a kids carnival, a crafters market, outdoor camping exhibitors, fine food and wine and live jazz bands. The 4 Wheel Drive Club of Southern Africa, together with the assistance of Stedone Homes and Talisman Tool Hire Ballito, will be building the first competitive 4x4 track on the North Coast. On Saturday, 03 July 2010 the Ballito Prawn & Jazz Festival will host a club competition and on Sunday, 04 July, a regional competition. This promises to be an action packed event. Come along and watch as competitors from throughout SA complete 20 daring obstacles to win the 2010 title. There will be an opportunity to catch a ride with an experienced driver and experience firsthand the adrenalin rush of the 4 x 4 track. Be ware! This is not for the faint-hearted.
The Golf Day will be a week prior to the festival, showcasing the beautiful above par course our coastline has to offer. The day will start early ensuring all players complete the course together and end off with the official opening of the Ballito Prawn & Jazz Festival.
